In Kiribati, babies are growing up healthy thanks to our local health and nutrition programmes. By arming families with the tools and knowledge to grow and prepare traditional crops, we’re turning the tide against decades of imported, ultra-processed foods that have created terrible health issues. Eating more nutritious, local foods, means the next generation can grow up not just healthier, but more independent and resilient.,

24 year-old Tearia from Betio, Kiribati, was worried and scared when she became a new mother. Without much support from family and friends, she was unsure of how to care for her new baby. But that soon changed when she joined ChildFund’s Start Strong, Stay Strong programme. Her Community Nutrition Leader volunteer quickly showed her how to prepare balanced meals for her daughter. She was taught how to use ingredients like potato, milk, and pumpkin leaves and how to add micro-nutrient powder to improve nutrition and prevent deficiencies. Tearia is now confident young mum and encouraging other mothers to join the programme.
