Innocent children don’t understand conflicts or why it hasn’t rained. All they know is hunger. For millions of children around the world, surviving after a disaster – whether man-made or natural is touch and go. Together with our partners around the world, ChildFund responds to emergencies caused by war, droughts, floods, cyclones and earthquakes. Together, we can help children get through the worst.

Many emergencies strike without warning. Earthquakes, flash floods, and fires are as unpredictable as they are destructive. And while forecasters may warn of cyclones, it’s often the whip in the tail that catches communities off guard. That’s why in 2025, we created the Emergency Response Fund. A bank of funds that enables us to act swiftly, without needing to appeal for donations first. The faster we can act, the more lives we can save.

How your donations can help
Planning for disasters
No one knows when a disaster will strike. But you can plan for the worst. That’s why ChildFund works with vulnerable communities to develop risk plans for emergencies. By knowing the risks, the vulnerabilities of infrastructure and the resources at hand, we can plan for future crises.
Create recovery plans
Detailed situation reports help us create more effective disaster recovery plans for vulnerable communities affected by crises. With your donations we can work with partners to establish practical road maps to recovery.
Rapid needs assessments
Quickly understanding what people need in the aftermath of a disaster is vital to emergency efforts. Your donations help us work with partners on the ground, going to remote communities and seeing firsthand what families urgently need to get through.
Life-saving supplies
After a disaster, water is the number one priority. Clean water to drink and to wash with is essential for survival. Your donations help ChildFund supply life-saving water and food packs to vulnerable families in an emergency.
Back to school
Children recover faster from the trauma. Of a disaster when there’s some kind of normality. Your donations help ChildFund to establish temporary learning areas, where children can safely resume education.
Distribute emergency supplies
When everything’s gone, families need the essentials to get through. Tarpaulins for a roof over their heads, pots and pans, emergencies food supplies and hygiene kits. By donating to ChildFund, you can help children and families who have lost everything start the recovery process.

FAQ’s - Emergency Response
Yes - you will receive an annual tax receipt at the end of the financial year. If you qualify, you can claim a 33.33% tax credit on a donation of $5 or more.
When you give to a specific emergency the donation is restricted to that specific emergency and the administration of those donations.
Donations will be tagged for distribution to our partners on the ground helping in that emergency and funds will be released to our partners on the ground periodically.
In the unlikely event that ChildFund New Zealand receive excess funds for this appeal, they will be restricted to our Emergency Response Fund which can help us respond to any emergency around the world.
The Fund can support preparedness & rapid response, recovery and resilience and administration and accountability.

The Fund allows us to be ready for any crisis, whether conflict, natural disaster, or climate-related emergency, so we can deliver help at a moment’s notice.
