Child Refugee Crisis

A terrifying journey for child refugees.
Eight years ago, over 742,000 Rohingya were forced to flee Myanmar in terror. Entire villages were torched. Families were massacred. Rojina was just four when she escaped with her family, running through forests and floodwaters, desperate to survive.
The journey was across the border was terrifying, and like many others, they arrived in Bangladesh exhausted, traumatised, and with nothing but the hope of safety.
Today, Rojina is 12. She’s spent most of her childhood in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh - the world’s largest refugee camp - trapped in overcrowded, dangerous conditions with no country to call home.
No future to move toward. No safe place to return.
This crisis no longer makes headlines - but it should.
Every day brings new threats - cyclones, landslides, fires. Her shelter, made of bamboo and plastic, clings to an unstable hillside.
“I get terrified whenever I hear about heavy rainfall or an approaching cyclone. Every year, people—including children—lose their lives" Rojina, age twelve.
The danger goes beyond the weather, though. Over 500,000 child refugees also face: gender-based violence, child marriage, exploitation and abuse, child labour and abduction.
Some are completely alone.

FAQ's - Appeals
Yes - you will receive an annual tax receipt at the end of the financial year. If you qualify, you can claim a 33.33% tax credit on a donation of $5 or more.
If the appeal displays the MFAT offering it’s because the specific topic is MFAT Co-Funded. This means that we raise a percentage of funds from the public and MFAT matches it with a particular percentage agreement.
For example, water projects are match funded x5 meaning we need to raise $1 to unlock another $4 from MFAT. So, your gift of $100 becomes $500 with no extra cost to you.
Donations go to the Appeal and the administration of those donations.
Should ChildFund New Zealand receive excess funds for an appeal, we no longer need funding, or the decision is made to close the appeal, your gift will go to our general funds pool.
