While many of ChildFund’s efforts are at early child development, ensuring kids are in school and not gathering water or food, the Pacific’s youth need our support, too. Many have left school to help the family to earn an income or simply because they’ve lost confidence. With broken education they face an uncertain future and poor employment opportunities.

ChildFund’s youth Bridging Course at Kiribati Institute of Technology (KIT) helps young people with an incomplete education. The course focuses on developing Numeracy, English and Literacy skills for which they gain certification. This creates employment opportunities including the opportunity to work in NZ and Australia.

Over the next five years, 250 young people will participate in the Bridging Course gaining the skills and knowledge to overcome difficulties and start on a path to a better future.

Tiantaake’s story

Regaining confidence and a future.

After being bounced around from one school to another because of her mother’s work, Tiantaake from Teaoraereke village, South Tarawa in Kiribati, found herself slipping behind in class.

"When I was in primary school, I struggled with writing, reading, doing simple calculations like division and subtraction, and English. I even got scared and shy when the teacher gave us activities because I didn't know how to do them," she says.

Confused and distracted, she ended up leaving school at just 13 years old. Four years later she feared she’d never learn.

It was then she discovered ChildFund’s programmes where she could learn at her pace and succeed in subjects that once scared her.

Our Youth Bridging Course taught her Numeracy, English and Literacy skills and today, she’s confidently continuing her education at the Kiribati Institute of Technology.

"I used to think I wasn't capable of doing anything, but now I know I can keep going and achieve my goals in life," she said happily.
